about black horse motel

“Take singer-songwriter narrative scene-driven songs; insert a blending of male and female vocals resulting in smooth strengthening harmonies. Then, enrich the entire musical experience with clean sets of strings that hover above the threshold that lies between classical and rustic Americana.” – Michael Colavita, The Deli Magazine

Philadelphia-based Americana band Black Horse Motel conjures a sound that draws on traditional folk roots, along with many other influences, and ties it together with unifying vocal harmonies. Songs are built on the foundations of folk music, but are elevated by an infectious blend of the traditional banjo and mandolin, with guitars, strings, drums and voices. The resulting sound is dexterous, rich, accessible and toe-tapping.

In 2012, Black Horse Motel offered their first recording; a self-titled EP. They followed up with their debut full-length LP, Red Summer Spirit. The record released on March 1, 2013 to a sold-out crowd at Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia and is now available through most major online outlets. Black Horse Motel is currently preparing to record a new album in fall 2015.

2014 brought two new members to Black Horse Motel. Galen Fitzpatrick further reinforces the folk and singer/songwriter foundations of the group, while bringing an additional alt-country vibe to guitar and vocals. Ryann Lynch heightens the foot-stomping with backcountry and Celtic-sprinkled fiddle and has added an additional vocal, bringing the total to 5 singers in the band. Together with existing members David Richardson (banjo/mandolin/guitar/vocals), Megan Manning (drums/percussion/vocals), Desireé Haney (cello/keys/vocals), the group continues to hone their sound, expand their fanbase, and write new songs for their upcoming recording.

In 2015, Black Horse Motel performed at the Dewey Beach Music Conference in Dewey Beach, DE, Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA, Xtreme Folk Festival in Telford, PA and the famed Philadelphia Folk Festival. The group has also performed at many of Philadelphia’s popular venues, including World Cafe Live, Kung Fu Necktie, Tin Angel, and Boot & Saddle. 2015 saw the group spreading their sound to the greater Philadelphia area, with performances in Jenkintown, King of Prussia, Phoenixville, New Hope, and Wilkes-Barre, as well as at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Union Hall in Brooklyn. Black Horse Motel has been featured as live performers on several radio programs, including Delaware’s WSTW Hometown Heroes show, Gene Shay’s Folk Show on WXPN, Folkadelphia on XPN2, and Y-Not Radio.
